In Conversation with Lena Fitzgerald

Have you ever looked at your life and felt like you were ticking all the boxes, yet somehow, you’d messed up the plot of your own story? You’ve got the house, the career, the family, the "vanilla" dream, but inside, you’re running on a hollow kind of autopilot.

In this episode of The Family Compass, we sat down with Lena Fitzgerald, a Women’s Mindset and Empowerment Coach, who lived that exact reality for over two decades before a single moment at her kitchen table changed everything.

For 24 years, Lena lived what she describes as a "run of the mill" life. She stayed in a job for convenience, got married young, and had children. On the surface, it worked. But internally, she was disconnected, living ten steps ahead in her head to manage everyone else’s schedule while completely losing touch with her own body and desires.

"I had completely pushed down any emotion, any feeling about doing something else... I realised that I'd actually forgotten who I was." — Lena Fitzgerald

The breaking point came when she realised her family didn't even recognise the person she had become. This realisation sparked a journey through personal development that eventually led her to Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP).

So, what exactly is NLP?

If you’ve heard the term but aren’t sure what it means, Lena breaks it down simply:

Neuro: How our brain (conscious and unconscious) processes information through filters that give life meaning.

Linguistic: How we communicate through words, behaviour, physiology, and most importantly, that inner voice.

Programming: The conditioning and beliefs we take on, predominantly between the ages of 0 and 7.

NLP is a toolkit for reprogramming the beliefs that no longer serve us as adults, allowing us to release the "tight grip" of old emotions and choose a new path.

One of the most profound takeaways from Lena’s experience is that self-awareness is the key to change. By doing the work to heal her own "crap," she stopped passing those generational cycles of self-doubt down to her own children.

For Lena, this meant levelling up her marriage. By communicating boundaries and no longer relying on her husband for her own happiness.

Empowering her children. By stepping back from "organising their lives" and allowing them to be responsible for themselves.

Busting the "Time" Myth. Realising that self-connection isn't a big, elaborate ritual, it’s as simple as pausing to ask, "What do I need right now?".

Lena is a big believer in "tasking". Taking action to embody your learnings. She left our listeners with a simple challenge to shift their frequency. We encourage you to listen along and take on your first task.
